Hellripper – Complete and Total Fucking Mayhem Album Review – 2016 AB

Hellripper is a one man band that comes from Aberdeen, Scotland to rock your world apart, in the good old ways. Formed by the young James McBain in 2014, Hellripper pays an honorable tribute to the gods of speed/thrash/black metal from a time when music was done from the heart and with passion.
The same passion and dedication that James showed when writing all these blackened anthems of destruction. I am really amazed that a young band like Hellripper has managed to release such an impressive record in 2016.

After releasing the EP “The Manifestation of Evil” in 2014 and several split EP’s in the last 2 years, Hellbringer is about to release its full length “Complete and Total Fucking Mayhem“, a compilation of almost all the songs which were featured on the above mentioned EPs.

Worldwide release date is scheduled for November 18th. While the vinyl version will be handled by Diabolic Might Records (500 copies), the CD will come out on Granite Factory Records.

This band is not original at all when it comes to composing but instead it has captured on tape that great feeling of old that many bands have searched for and never obtained. Comprised of 12 songs, with a total span of 29 minutes, “Complete and Total Fucking Mayhem” is a maelstrom of savage riffs, catchy drumming and hoarse vocals, which strongly remind, amongst others, of old Quorthon and Tom Angelripper.

There’s nothing new under the sun on this album but you just cannot stand still when the music is unleashed from the speakers. Glasses start flying, bottles are emptied, tables are turned and the chairs are smashed. Yes, this Far West fight scene can be imagined with Hellripper in the background, as the perfect soundtrack.

Everything is in place, from the song titles (Flesh Ripper, Black Mass Sacrifice, Nekroslut, Blood on the Cross and Nocturnal Terror) to the cover, which is absolutely brilliant and reflects exactly what this record is about: old school aggression, metal and Satanic headbanging.

When the longest tracks on this record have 3’06” (“Total Mayhem”) and 3’14” (“Full Moon Witchery” ), you can imagine how intense and violent the other short tracks are, giving you the chance to really enjoy them to the full, with no fucking useless fillers inside.
This is what I like the most about this release, it’s straight in your face, quality metal. It may be full of cliches, but that really doesn’t matter when the inside content is so fucking good.

The production on this release is exactly what this type of music needs so that everything can focus on the sound itself, emphasizing the quality of the short but intense tracks, with a malevolent punkish vibe. A pure delight to the years of old school metal lovers. AAARRGGGHHH!!!!

Take “Hell’s Rock ‘n’ Roll“, for example. The song opens with a melodic guitar solo and then everything turns into an obsessive riffing frenzy, enveloped in some thrashy vocals. Absolutely fantastic, this is what true rock’n roll is all about.

Buy this product or die trying!! “Complete and Total Fucking Mayhem” is a true tribute to the old gods, played in a way I could not believe that was possible in this century. Honestly, this record really made my day and gave me a desire to travel back in time, in the mid 80’s, when this music was at its peak and everything was much more simpler and easier than today. Ugh!!
